The week after I finished college I sold my motorcycle and flew to Paris, France. I had made no plans or reservations. I winged it for about 6 weeks over there, traveling through France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and London; then back to Paris. I loved every minute of it. I met a German girl there who rolled me a Drum cigarette. I bought wine for 3 dollars a bottle. I met a Danish girl who gave me a plant which I stuffed into my backpack and miraculously survived all the way back to New York. I brought sketchbooks and drew while I was there. The drawing in the sketchbook depicts men playing cards in the Jardin de Luxembourg. My first trip cost me $1,250 total, including airfare, all train travel, youth hostels, cheap hotels near the Gare Du Nord, and baguettes with cheese. I set up this still life as an homage to Paris. The first version was a charcoal drawing. I made the painting a couple of years later.
